HSS bedeutet Hohlstahlprofil. Hohlstahlprofile (HSS) bestehen gemäß den geltenden Normen ausschließlich aus Baustahl. Flachstahlplatten werden im Herstellungsprozess durch Verschweißen der Kanten schrittweise in verschiedene Formen wie rund, elliptisch, quadratisch und rechteckig gebracht. Quadratische und rechteckige Stahlhohlprofile werden auch als Stahlrohre oder Kastenprofile bezeichnet.

Hohlprofile aus Baustahl, auch bekannt als Stahlrohre oder Hohlprofile, sind Stahl, der zu einem hohlen Rohr geformt wird. Man unterscheidet drei Haupttypen: Rechteckprofile (RHS), Quadratprofile (SHS) und Kreisprofile (CHS). Jeder Profiltyp hat seine spezifischen Eigenschaften und dient einem bestimmten Zweck. Hohlprofile aus Baustahl sind in kaltgeformten und warmgefertigten Ausführungen (Gütenklassen S275 und S355) erhältlich. Sie finden breite Anwendung im Bauwesen und Maschinenbau, beispielsweise als Rahmen, Stützen, Geländer und Träger.
