Ternium (NYSE:TX) last announced its earnings results on Tuesday, October 30th. The basic materials company reported $2.49 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, topping the Zacks’ consensus estimate of $1.60 by $0.89. Ternium had a net margin of 11.58% and a return on equity of 21.81%. The firm had revenue of $2.90 billion for the quarter, compared to analyst estimates of $3.04 billion. During the same quarter last year, the business earned $0.99 earnings per share. Ternium’s revenue was up 14.5% compared to the same quarter last year. As a group, sell-side analysts expect that Ternium will post 6.89 earnings per share for the current fiscal year.

Defining the required number of steps and their scale greatly influences program cost and timeline. From a capital expenditure standpoint, an automated pilot plant may cost $1–3 million, an integrated demonstration unit in the range of $10–50 million and a full commercial plant could easily be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. These costs must be taken into consideration before undertaking any process-development program.

18 – Ottawa announced $1.6 billion to help struggling energy companies stay afloat, buy new equipment and diversify as Alberta grappled with bargain basement oil prices. $1 billion was allocated through Export Development Canada for oil and gas companies to make capital investments and purchase new technology. $500 million was to be made available through the Business Development Bank of Canada over the next two years to help smaller oil and gas companies navigate the downturn. A further $150 million was to be used for clean growth and infrastructure projects. The package did not include money for more rail cars Alberta was planning to purchase to help move a glut of oil behind the low price of Canadian oil.

2 – Five weeks after New Brunswickers went to the polls, the minority Liberal government of Premier Brian Gallant fell on a confidence vote. Progressive Conservative leader Blaine Higgs became the premier-designate after meeting with Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau and said he wanted the transition of power to occur as quickly as possible.

To put that in some more context, the Chevrolet Bolt, by comparison, offers a single motor up front producing 200 horsepower, while the Nissan Leaf puts out 147. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range’s rear motor produces 258 horsepower, and the all-wheel drive Dual Motor Performance models make up to 450 ponies combined, according to Motor Trend. (It’s worth noting that the combined figure on the all-wheel drive model is not just the sum of the two motor outputs).

8 – Shoppers Drug Mart was granted a licence to sell medical marijuana online. Health Canada’s list of authorized cannabis sellers and producers has been updated to reflect that the pharmacy can sell dried and fresh cannabis, as well as plants, seeds and oil.

25 – The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said an Air Canada pilot had been awake for over 19 hours when his plane had a near miss at San Francisco International Airport late on the night of July 7, 2017. The plane mistakenly lined up to land on a taxiway that had four other planes on it at the time and cleared the first jet by only 30 metres when it initiated a go-around and started climbing.

The Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission (ITC) will next determine whether to launch AD and/or CVD duty and injury investigations, respectively, on these products. Commerce will be responsible for calculating the ultimate AD/CVD margins on the imports, while the ITC will conduct a concurrent investigation to determine if the imports are injuring the U.S. industry. If Commerce finds dumping or unfair subsidization in its preliminary determinations, currently scheduled for April 12, 2018 (CVD) and June 26 2018 (AD), importers will be charged the calculated duties upon the products’ entry in the U.S. market.

This is good news, because while car enthusiasts might decry the electric car revolution for the further death of manual transmissions and also the death of roaring engine sounds, at least some future economy cars will send power to the right set of wheels.

8 – Bombardier Inc. announced it would cut 5,000 jobs company-wide and sell off two units as part of a five-year plan to rein in costs, focus on rail and business jets and reduce the net long-term debt of $9 billion. About 2,500 Bombardier workers were being laid off in Quebec and 500 in Ontario, with the 2,000 other cuts occurring overseas.

That low-mounted battery, which will initially come in roughly 50 kWh and 80 kWh sizes (more to come in the future, VW says), is expected to offer between 205 and 342 miles of range on Europe’s new WLTP cycle, or around 175 to 300 miles on the EPA cycle.
