28 – A massive earthquake and tsunami with waves as high as six metres struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, destroying more than 70,000 homes. The country’s national board for disaster management said on Oct. 8 that the death toll was at least 1,949 with another 2,500 people injured.

Personally, I would take a long hard look at the top-tier pilot training schools, places such as Flight-Safety.  Fully half the pilots out there today will retire in the next decade; meanwhile, air travel demand is just exploding.  The industry is short some 800,000 pilots.  Where are you going to find these guys?  Lufthansa already hires "zero hour" pilot candidates, guys who have never even sat in a little 4-cylinder 80-hp trainer, and when they come out of the Flight-Safety school in Florida, they go straight into the co-pilot seat on a twin-jet. In the old days, the airlines would hire guys from the military, or who had spent years flying small commuter aircraft, even bush planes, to build experience. Those days are gone.

13 – Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced the creation of Canada’s first protected marine area under the Canada Wildlife Act. Shell Canada cleared the way for the Scott Islands marine National Wildlife Area by giving up its ocean exploration rights off northern Vancouver Island.

25 – The Trudeau government ordered officials to take a second look at any case where funding or services for veterans’ family members are not related to the veterans’ service. The move followed widespread anger after Veterans Affairs decided to pay for the PTSD treatment of a Halifax man convicted of killing an off-duty police officer because his father was a veteran who had also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

12 – U.S. President Donald Trump’s former lawyer was sentenced to three years in prison. Michael Cohen’s lawyers argued that he should be spared jail time because he co-operated in multiple federal investigations involving the president. But the Federal Court judge said Cohen deserved a harsh punishment for crimes including evading $1.4-million in taxes, lying to Congress about his talks with Russians and arranging illicit payments to silence women who posed a risk to Trump’s presidential campaign.

It may not be as large as other Asian stock exchanges but it is equally full of potentials. The SET is also the first stock exchange in Asia to join the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative.

16 – The federal government introduced legislation to ban the practice of isolating prisoners who pose risks to security or themselves. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the bill would replace solitary confinement with “structured intervention units” where inmates removed from the general population would maintain their access to rehabilitative programming, interventions and mental-health care.

More than 90 companies on the SGX have a market capitalization of more than S$1 billion. Given these compelling data, it is unquestionable why many investors are looking forward to trade on the SGX— be for the short-term or the long-term, and why many companies are looking forward to be listed on the SGX.

Having access to advanced analytical capacities, such as gas chromatography (GC) methods like thermal conductivity detectors (TCD), flame ionization detectors (FID) or nitrogen-phosphorous detectors (NCD), as well as GC mass spectrometry, are key to validating the catalyst performance data, identifying the effect of trace compounds and ultimately providing the team with confidence in the results (Figure 6). Online GCs and process analyzers can provide realtime data for close monitoring of plant performance. Offline analysis typically provides more detailed and accurate composition data, particularly at extremely low levels. Relationships with local universities and third-party analytical providers can also be helpful when specialized analyses are required, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). For most moderately sized companies, the use of third parties for specialized analytical work saves both on the initial investment and longterm upkeep needed for highly sophisticated equipment.
