Beyond bench-scale testing, the pilot-plant design should attempt to mimic the commercial plant as much as possible. The key element to this approach is ensuring that the reaction system is designed such that the catalyst bed operates as close as possible to expected commercial conditions. This includes the expected linear and radial temperature profiles, operating pressures, space velocity and number of stages. Linear velocity can be difficult to match, given potential limits on reactor length. Thus, to support scaleup, parametric studies should be done at varying linear velocities to determine whether bulk mass transfer is an issue at the lower velocities of the pilot scale. Additionally, startup and shutdown procedures should be synchronized with those of the future commercial plant and recommended by the catalyst supplier.

14 – Manitoba RCMP announced they had called in the Ontario Provincial Police to probe alleged assaults linked to hydro projects in the province’s north during the 1960s. The investigation came after an arm’s-length review agency released a report saying the presence of a largely male construction workforce led to the sexual abuse of Indigenous women, some of whom said their complaints were ignored by the RCMP.

“Although Nersa’s methodology requires the adjustment of the sales volumes to reflect current market conditions, it is incorrect to use the previous year’s revenues as a base for the following year because the revenue required by Eskom is a function of the costs (allowable revenue) and the sales volumes forecast to be achieved. Both the sales volumes and allowable revenue need to be adjusted. The adjusted sales volumes cannot be done in isolation from the related adjustment of costs. Therefore, the Energy Regulator has evaluated Eskom’s allowable revenue, taking into consideration the sales volume levels anticipated to be achieved in the 2018/19 financial year.”
