What is hollow section

What is a Hollow Section?

A hollow section (also called hollow structural section, HSS) is a type of metal profile with a hollow, tubular cross-section. Unlike solid bars, hollow sections are lightweight yet strong, making them ideal for structural and mechanical applications.

Types of Hollow Sections

Hollow sections come in three main shapes:

Type Shape Common Usage
Circular Hollow Section (CHS) Round tube Pipelines, columns, greenhouse frames, handrails
Square Hollow Section (SHS) Square tube Frames, machinery, construction, support beams
Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) Rectangular tube Structural frameworks, gates, automotive parts

Manufacturing Process

1. Forming – Steel sheets are rolled into shape (round, square, or rectangular).

2. Welding – Edges are welded (e.g., ERW, SAW, or seamless methods).

3. Sizing & Finishing – Cut to length, cleaned, and coated (galvanized/painted if needed).
