What is a Hollow Section?
A hollow section (also called hollow structural section, HSS) is a type of metal profile with a hollow, tubular cross-section. Unlike solid bars, hollow sections are lightweight yet strong, making them ideal for structural and mechanical applications.
Types of Hollow Sections
Hollow sections come in three main shapes:
Type | Shape | Common Usage |
Circular Hollow Section (CHS) | Round tube | Pipelines, columns, greenhouse frames, handrails |
Square Hollow Section (SHS) | Square tube | Frames, machinery, construction, support beams |
Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) | Rectangular tube | Structural frameworks, gates, automotive parts |
Manufacturing Process
1. Forming – Steel sheets are rolled into shape (round, square, or rectangular).
2. Welding – Edges are welded (e.g., ERW, SAW, or seamless methods).
3. Sizing & Finishing – Cut to length, cleaned, and coated (galvanized/painted if needed).
